Woman accused of hitting and killing Mishawaka boy pleads guilty

SOUTH BEND — The woman accused of hitting and killing a 7-year-old Mishawaka boy pleaded guilty Tuesday without a plea agreement.

Kayla Bennett, 22, pleaded guilty to causing a death while operating a motor vehicle with a schedule I or II controlled substance, a Level 4 Felony. Her sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 22, and she could be sentenced to two to 12 years in prison.

In June, Briyson Councell was playing with his sister in the backyard of their duplex in the 800 block of Sixth Street. Bennett reportedly struck Councell with her SUV while pulling into the alley behind the home. Bennett’s family lived in the other part of the duplex.
