Suicide

The odds of developing depression as a young adult were 37% higher for those who used marijuana in their teen years compared to those who didn’t.

The odds of a young adult thinking about suicide were 50% higher in those who smoked marijuana. The odds of a suicide attempt were almost 3.5 times higher in marijuana smokers, and those who smoked marijuana were more likely to suffer depression and suicidal thoughts and more than three times as likely to attempt suicide between the ages of 18 and 32. The odds of attempting suicide is sevenfold higher in those who are using daily before the age of 17.

In Colorado in 2017, 32% of 15- to 19-year-olds had marijuana present in their bodies at the time of their suicide.

Cannabis use disorder is a common comorbidity and risk marker for self-harm, mortality, and death by unintentional overdose and homicide among youths with mood disorders.

Availability, acceptance, and advertising normalizes cannabis use. Normalization influences our beliefs and decisions. Marijuana addiction among youth ages 12-17 is 25% higher in states with recreational cannabis stores. NYU/Columbia study
